Havre de Grace turns in a smooth work over at Keeneland’s Poly track ahead of the Classic
The 4-year-old Rick Porter and Fox Hill Farms owned filly, Havre de Grace, continued preparing for the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Classic when she turned in a 5 furlong workout under jockey Gabriel Saez and completed the distance in 58.60 seconds at Keeneland on 24 October, 2011.
The Breeders’ Cup Classic will be held at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011. The 4-year-old Saint Liam filly took to the Keeneland’s Poly track early in the morning and was joined by another of Larry Jones’ horse who just galloped in front of Havre de Grace.
Out of Easter Bunnette by Carson City, Havre de Grace turned in a smooth workout and on a cool morning she went three furlongs in 35 3/5 seconds, half mile in 47 seconds and going five furlongs in 58 3/5 seconds, as the filly galloped out six furlongs in 1 minute and 12 seconds.
Putting up another horse in front of Havre de Grace really gets her going, and that was the logic behind send in a horse ahead of her to pose as a target.
According to Saez, when she sees another horse in front of her, she puts her ears up and looks to take and looks to take them down. All in all Gabriel Saez, who regularly works Havre de Grace reported that it was a good workout.
Havre de Grace is being pointed to the Classic in a bid for Horse of the Year honours, and Larry Jones was there at Keeneland monitoring the filly’s move personally.
The conditioner was over the moon after her work, but the filly was blowing a bit after the workout but didn’t drink a lot of water which means it is normal.
Larry Jones said he wanted to run Havre de Grace in the Breeders’ Cup last Saturday, but he thinks she is ready to go and that she can’t get any better.
The filly is coming off a win in the Grade 1 Beldame Stakes at Belmont Park on 1 October over at 1 1/8 miles, and since then the filly has been steadily working towards the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
