Havre de Grace with yet another headline after retiring to stud: sold for $10 million
Very few horses get to make the news of being sold at one of the highest prizes in the history, and it is an honour that is attached with the horses who have already accomplished extra ordinarily. Havre de Grace was sold for an amazing $10 million at the
Fasig-Tipton November sale Monday night. The selling prize was recorded to be the highest ever since 2008.
Saint Liam’s daughter first made news by adding to her profile one after the other important and significant races. The utter determination and resilience of the mare got her the ‘Horse of the Year’ title in 2011. Extending the fame and glory to a level
that comes just once in a life-time, the incredibly accomplished mare made the headlines after being sold for one of the highest prizes ever recorded.
Striking the same fame bar was, The Green Monkey who was sold for $16 million in 2006. 1987 was the first time when a horse of the year was sold, Lady’s Secret went to new owners for $5.4 million.
''She's everything a race horse could be. She did everything a race horse could do,'' Pope said following the sale. ''She's the epitome of what we're all trying to breed as far as conformation and racing ability. Hopefully she will pass that on to her foals.''
''I thought we had her and I was pretty happy there at that point,'' Pope said about a $7 million bid. ''This was more than I thought she'd bring. But this is a once-in-a-lifetime-shot and I'm taking a shot at it.''
''It's always hard when you've got a horse like that you've spent so much time watching perform the way she did. It was hard when I went over to say goodbye to her today,'' Porter said. ''It was exciting that she brought what she deserved because she's got
the whole package.''
The mare won nine out of her sixteen career attempts, and her grand career earnings amounted to $2.6 million out of which she made $1.6 million during her championship campaign. That period comprised of seven races out of which she landed five. One of the
most significant was the Woodward where she dominated on an all male field.
The mare was retired to stud after an ankle injury.
