  1. All of Moloka'i.  Most of the Big Island (Hawai'i).  A fair amount of Kaua'i.  O'ahu is crowded with businesses and tourists.  Maui is crowded with tourists.

What you do have to keep in mind (unless you are independently wealthy) is how you will earn a living.

  2. Problem is not which part of Hawaii has less tourists. I think the problem is how you could adopt the culture that is very different from Tennessee.

My tenant in Waikiki once told me that his sister was visiting from California and wanted to live in Ewa Beach. It was her first time to Hawaii. Ewa Beach is very local. However, local people don't like to see strangers, especially, Caucasians. Their kids had a hard time in school and they regretted to live in a "local area" without any research.

I am not saying that you can't live in a "local area", but with my years of experience being "local", I've seen Mainland folks like to live in a mixed (local and new comers) area - like Hawaii Kai or Kailua on Oahu.

BTW, have you heard about a famous book "Hawaii the Big Island Revealed" or any other "revealed" books? There isn't any place that tourists haven't set foot on. So,  "places that weren't tourists attractions" doesn't exist.
