Why is every recipe with pineapple in it automatically make it "Hawaiian" when pineapple is not indengenous to Hawaii? Why don't they call it "Brazilian Pizza"?

  1. Asides from Hawaiian Pizza, can you please tell me what other dishes that are non-Hawaiian named with Hawaiian because of the pineapple.  I'm trying to think what other dishes are named so called "Hawaiian." I'm Hawaiian, but I can't seem to recall anything asides from cocktail drinks and that pizza. Please enlighten me.  Respectively I am asking.

Naming food by origin of culture, does it means that anything with pasta is no longer called Italian but Chinese?

  2. Pineapple is common in Hawaii. It is kind of the first thought thing. People tend to say oh pineapple it must be from hawaii. I don't think everything with pineapple is Hawaiian though.

  3. Yeah it's pretty annoying.

Like everyone else said people associate pineapples with Hawaii.

Why? I don't know. Whoever started the "Hawaiian" pizza, I suppose.

I am native Hawaiian as well and find it pretty ignorant. But that's what our world runs on now days, doesn't it?

  4. Because..............

Pineapple cultivation by US companies began in the early 1900s on Hawaii. Dole and Del Monte began growing pineapple on the island of Oahu in 1901 and 1917, respectively. Maui Pineapple Company began pineapple cultivation on the island of Maui in 1909.

  5. It's not so much where the fruit comes from. Using the word "Hawaiian" makes the dish sound exotic!

I use pineapple when I bake a ham or when I make a pineapple upside down cake. I know a lot of people who use it but do not refer to 'Hawaiian"  when they do.

  6. (not sure what you meant to ask w/the brazilian pizza question - a little unclear :) ) but to answer your first question, because Dole is the number 1 name to Americans for pineapple (due to their having pretty much a monopoly on all the canned pineapple and all the advertising with Hawaii in it), and Dole's big pineapple plantation is in Hawaii.  Therefore that's what Americans think of when they think of pineapple: Hawaii.

And why "every recipe"?  Either you're talking about traditional/popular American recipes, or if you're not, then evidently the "pineapple = Hawaiian" concept has crossed over and the Hawaii/pineapple notion has taken hold in other places.

(My friend used to live right on a pineapple plantation in Hawaii as well -  wasn't Dole though).

  7. A to the men.... Im Hawaiian and find that to be offensive! Just kidding... French Fries, is another on that gets me going....

  8. thank you shine i did not know that and yea they should call it Brazilian pizza i know what you mean
