Hawks defeat Piaget in US Open Polo Championship – Polo Update
Freddie Mannix scored seven times and had an assist, as the Hawks managed a victory over Piaget in the first round match of the United States Open Polo Championship. The one-sided game was played at the International Polo Club in Wellington.
The Hawks had some significant punches in the opening game, wrapped up some points from Freddie Mannix and Mariano Aguerre in the first half of play, and preserved their advantage in the final round to finish a long journey with a victory.
The strikers of the Hawks were all around onto the field and marked twelve goals against the four of their competitors. The defensemen of Hawks showed stiff resistance and allowed Piaget only a single point in the first three chukkas.
The Hawks opened the game in quite an offensive way and received two goals while holding Piaget only for a single point. Mannix nailed a couple of goals of which one was scored on a penalty shot while the other from the field effort. Lolo Castagnola managed
a solitary goal for Piaget in the first seven and half minute of play. The Hawks were hanging onto a narrow one goal, 2-1 advantage at the end of the first chukka.
Interestingly, the two sides performed excellently in the second period, but remained scoreless. The defenders from both sides played like men of iron.
The goal-scoring machine of the Hawks hurled back to back fires and ruined the defence line of Piaget. Mariano Aguerre notched three goals by getting two from the field and converting another penalty shot. In the later time, Freddie Mannix and his brother
Julian Mannix marked one goal apiece and expanded the Hawks lead to an insurmountable six goals, 7-1, after the first half of action.
The attackers of Piaget came alive in the fourth set of play, but could only score a single score in the period. Nachi Heguy connected on a spot shot to show their presence onto the field. However, the strikers of the Hawks were not sitting idly and watching
the game go by, as Freddie Mannix in a counter offensive notched another two goals and expanded the lead to seven goals.
The fifth set of play was quite a low scoring, as only one goal was scored in the period. Mariano added a goal in the second last round and expanded the lead up to eight goals.
In an unprecedented way, the two teams exchanged a couple of goals in the final set of play and made the game more interesting.
Freddie Mannix scored off a couple of goals in the final set of play while Castagnola managed two goals for Piaget. With the final horn, the Hawks rode off the field with a commanding 12-4 victory.
In the upcoming matches, Valiente is going to face Pony Express, Orchard Hill to Audi while Las Monjitas will meet Bendabout.
