Hawks take Faraway down 12-10 in US Open Polo Championship – US Polo Update
Freddie Mannix and Mariano Aguerre scored four goals apiece, as the Hawks powered a 12-10 triumph over Faraway in the last round match of the United States Open Polo Championship. An exciting game was played between the two talented teams, as the Hawks overcame
Faraway by two goals and set a place in the quarter-final round of the event.
The two teams have maintained their previous record, as the Hawks earned their third victory while Faraway received their third defeat in the round clashes being ousted on the way to the quarter-final fights. The players of the Hawks had some key punches
in the opening period, rolling up some points from Freddie Mannix and Aguerre in the first half and preserved the lead until the final period.
The Hawks started the game in quite an aggressive way and obtained three goals while holding Faraway off the scoreboard in the first seven and half minutes of play. Freddie Mannix and Aguerre scored two and one goal respectively to put the Hawks ahead on
the scoreboard at the end of the period, 3-0.
The Faraway attack came alive in the second round, but could not create much impact on the scoreboard. Both teams scored one goal each in the period, as Luis Escobar was the player who scored a goal and brought Faraway onto the scoreboard. Aguerre scored
another goal for the Hawks to close out the period, with the team on top with three goals, 4-1 advantage.
The speed of the game continued to accelerate in the third set of play and seven goals were scored from the two sides. The players of Faraway cranked up their offence and reduced the Hawks lead down to two goals. Freddie and Julian Mannix along with Aguerre
scored one goal each and further expanded the lead. Mike Azzaro notched three goals and brought his team back into the game. At half-time, the Hawks were leading the game by two goals, 7-5.
The pace of the game further sped up and both teams scored another seven goals in the period. Lucas Monteverde and Luis Escobar nailed a couple of goals each and made the game more interesting. The Hawks trio of Mariano Gonzalez, Freddie Mannix and Aguerre
added one point each to retain their lead in the game. At the end of the fourth set of play, Faraway was only one goal way from the Hawks lead, 10-9.
Interestingly, the two teams after two hard-hitting chukkas cooled down and remained scoreless in the seven and half minutes of play. Julian Mannix scored the first point of the last chukka and stretched the lead up to two goals. Monteverde scored another
goal for Faraway, but it was countered from Gonzalez in the very next minute.
With the final horn of regulation time sounding, the Hawks managed a convincing two-goal victory in the crucial contest and set a place in the quarter-final round. They will now face Valiente on 9 April, 2011.
