My area has a serious hawk problem. Theres hawks in my yard every time I go out side and its killed every single stray kitten in the neighborhood. and just recently one took my new full pug puppy! I was outside in my backyard playing with him, and a big hawk flew from no where and took him. Is there anyway to stop this? One has even killed and ate my neighbors full grown cat. Could the cities animal control do anything about this?

  1. no do not shoot it or poison it!!!! many hawks are endangered! call animal control they may be able to relocate many of the hawks to places where there is proper food sources...not cats and doggies.... :( I'm real sorry by the way! i wanna cry now) but do not do what that girl says! we are taking away their environment so their food supply is low. they don't know where else to go but animal control may know where a good place for them is! :)

  2. Well, this is an unusual story to say the least.  I have a red shouldered hawk that has a nest in a tree in my back yard and has for about 6 years.  This year I had to take one of the fledglings to a rescue center because he fell out of the nest and the peacocks attacked him and tried to kill him.  A red shouldered hawk is a medium to large hawk and she eats chickens and smaller animals but not any of the stray cats or my dachshund.  I have witnessed her trying to take a mother chicken and it is not an easy task for her.  When I picked up the baby, the feet were as large as my hands and the body was about 14 inches in height.  I later found the body of one of the other fledglings in the yard so the baby I rescued may be the only baby who survived this years brood.  I think you should google hawk rescue or raptor rescue and or club in your area and ask them if they can relocate this hawk if this is really a problem.

  3. I find this VERY hard to believe..hawks do not typically take cats and dogs.  Mostly they feed on mice, rats, snakes, and maybe some very small squirrels.  Hawks are not capable of lifting much weight..most hawks can only lift half of what they weigh..and being that a typical Red Tailed Hawk weighs 2 lbs..they can only manage to lift 1 lb.  Most cats and small dogs weigh a LOT more than that.  Are these eagles?  They can lift a bit more weight..but still only about 5lbs max..still a lot less than a full grown cat or small dog.  If you a letting your pets run loose outside without supervision..than it is really not natures fault if they are getting killed while out there. Cats are best kept indoors where they are no only safe from wild predators but from poison, cars, cat fights, dogs, disease, parasites, etc.  If you have small dogs, they too should not be outside unattended if you live in an area with wildlife such as coyotes, etc.  All wild native birds are protected by law...harming, harassing, or killing them can land you in jail and paying large fines.  Animal control is not going to stop nature for irresponsible pet owners.  Keep your pets indoors or supervise them while outside. Mrs. Brendon is obviously a teenager and has no knowledge of what she is talking about.  Putting poison out into the environment can mean poisoning your own pets, all sorts of native wildlife, water sources, or even neighoborhood children.  This is VERY illegal as well, and should not be attempted under ANY circumstances.
