Hawks thrash Piaget White, 10-6 in ‘The Memorial by Piaget’ semi-finals: Polo Recap
The Hawks and Piaget White fought each other in the semi-finals of ‘The Memorial by Piaget’ tournament played at the Grand Champions Polo Club on May 27, with Hawks coming out victorious at 10-6. Robert Orthwein and Julian Mannix were the real architects
of the victory, who added four and three goals, respectively in the triumph.
Following the hardly fought quarter-final against Grand Champions, the Piaget White was looking unimpressive either on defence or on offence.
Brandon Phillips was the person who opened the scoring for Hawks from the field. In the very next minute, Nic Roldan counter-attacked and levelled the score at one-all. After missing some chances, Robert Orthwein scored a goal to put Hawks ahead onto
the score-board at the end of the first chukka, 2-1.
In the second round, both the teams swapped one goal and moved forward with Hawks leading the game. The defensemen from the two sides were at their best in the period and denied numerous efforts from the either side. Roldan notched an early goal which
was countered from Julian Mannix. The chukka concluded with Piaget White trailing by a single goal, 3-2.
In the third set of play, both teams exchanged one goal more to make the game more interesting. Roldan scored a goal from the field which was countered by a goal from Orthwein in the last minutes of the period. Both the two teams carried out plenty
of strikes, but they could only get one goal apiece. The first three chukkas of play was ended with Hawks holding a single goal lead, 4-3.
After the short break, the Piaget White attackers cranked up their offence and took the game into their favour. They scored a couple of goals while holding Hawks scoreless in the period. Melissa Ganzi, the skipper of the Piaget White team scored a
goal through a long shot while his team-mate Roldan added another to establish their first dominance. At the end of the four chukkas, Piaget White was hanging on to a single goal edge, 5-4.
In the second last round, the Hawks’ attack came alive and they obtained four goals while holding Piaget White scoreless. Every player from the Hawks participated in the scoring including Brandon Phillips, J.J. Celis, Mannix and Orthwein. With one
chukka left to play, the Hawks held a three goals’ lead, 8-5.
The final chukka was also belonged to the Hawks, which received two goals while holding Piaget White only for one goal. Orthwein and Mannix scored one goal each from the Hawks, while Juan Badiola added a goal for Piaget White. However, the Hawks won
the game and moved into the finals of ‘The Memorial by Piaget’.
