Hawks win all three matches at UMES Invitational – Volleyball News
The Women’s volleyball team of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) finished a home campaign over the weekend with a perfect record of 3-0. The UMES Invitational ran from September 30 to October 1 and provided a great chance for the Lady Hawks
to enjoy the spotlight. Princess Anne in Maryland hosted the field of play as the UMES Hawks played three matches and dominated on centre court.
They were challenged by Alabama State University on the first day of the tournament. The visiting team could not seize its chances and lost the match in straight sets, giving an early victory to the hosts. In the next match on Saturday, October 2, Lady Hawks
carried the momentum and gave out another great performance against North Carolina Eagles. The second match also covered its length in three sets. On the same day, California State Bakersfield were scheduled to meet the home team who exhibited controlled net
action and won the match at loss of one set.
Match 1: Hawks 3 - Hornets 0
UMES posted a 3-0 (25-19, 25-3, 25-12) victory over Alabama State Hornets on Day 1 of the tournament. Don Metil, the Head Coach of Hawks, worked out a winning plan for his team and led them to success. The Hawks kept the operations well under control in
all three sets and recorded an overall hitting percentage of .448. Kaveinga Lea’Aetoa and Saitaua losia did the job for the Hawks and helped the team with a 3-0 victory.
Match 2: Hawks 3 - Eagles 0
In the second match of UMES Invitational, the home team was challenged by North Carolina Central University Eagles. The NCC team struggled to earn points against the hosts and ended up with a 0-3 loss. The Hawks demonstrated a stellar performance and sent
25-16, 25-16, 25-17 on board as they dismantled their opponents. The Eagles had no chance to keep up with the hosts as they proved to be too strong for them. Ndidi Ibe and Losia of the home squad formed a great combo in the match and scored consecutive points.
Moreover, Vaitai also supported the Hawks with powerful aces.
Match 3: Hawks 3 - Roadrunner 1
After winning two matches in a row, UMES’s morale was high. The players enjoyed great form, while the home crowd was ready to back their team in the third match against Bakersfield Roadrunners. The California State team performed better against the Hawks
than the previous two teams. They fought bravely and managed to steal one set victory the home squad. Nevertheless, Hawks claimed the rest of the three sets and clinched success in the four-set game. They scored 25-14, 25-22, 18-25, 25-22 to send the Roadrunners
packing.
