Haydock punters can relax in Easterby’s Residence
The opening race on Haydock’s card on Thursday is the Dave Tatlock Maiden Auction Stakes at 2.10 pm, which is for two-year-olds over a distance of one mile. This looks a good opportunity for Tim Easterby’s Residence And Spa to get off the mark, as this son of Dubai Destination has by far and away the best form in the book.
He made a pleasing debut at Leicester back in May where he ran on well in the closing stages to finish second to Sheer Courage, having been very slowly away. He then showed some improvement when contesting a maiden at Musselburgh the following month, coming home in third place behind Falkland Flyer. However, his final start had many people putting him into their notebooks, when running in a maiden event over seven furlongs at Redcar.
Having been up with the leaders from the off, he found himself outpaced heading down towards the final furlong, before staying on well close home, finishing third to Next Edition. On breeding alone, he is crying out for a step up in distance so this extra furlong seems certain to suit. If he continues to improve as he is entitled to do, then he will prove extremely difficult to beat here.
Fabiello
Fabiello is an interesting contender from the stable of Tom Dascombe. He has had just the three outings to date and having shown very little on his debut in a maiden at Wolverhampton back in June, he improved markedly on his return to that track a fortnight later. Held up in the early part of the race, he came with a terrific run to take up the running as the field entered the final furlong. Unfortunately, he began to run out of steam as the finishing line approached and Fifth Dimension overhauled him in the final few strides.
Clearly encouraged by that effort, connections entered him for an above average maiden at Doncaster for his final start, which came just five days ago. This was probably his best performance to date, as he looked likely to win having gone to the front with a furlong to race. However, once again he lacked that extra turn of foot in the closing stages, and this time he had to settle for third place behind the fast finishing Indigo Way and Midnight Rider.
He clearly has ability and will surely win races in time, though this step up to a mile is not certain to suit. His sire, Indesatchel was an outstanding performer over seven furlongs but failed to win over further. With his odds likely to be around the 5/2 mark, he looks one for the layers on the betting exchanges to get their teeth into.
Al Rannan
Michael Bell has a fair record with his runners at this track, but he will have to work wonders to get Al Rannan to win this, judged on his only effort to date. Making his debut in an ordinary maiden at Leicester, he looked badly in need of the experience, being slowly away and struggling in rear for the entire race. He eventually finished last of 12 and even with the in form Jamie Spencer on board, it would come as a major surprise if he was he to threaten Residence And Spa.
Geblah
The only other runner of note is the well-bred filly Geblah, trained by David Simcock. By the top class stallion Green Desert, she certainly has the pedigree to win races and at around this trip. It is also worth noting that the stables juveniles have been performing well this year and from 10 runners, they have made the frame on five occasions, which included the first time out winner Dream Ahead. Any market support for this one would be significant and her position in the betting should reflect her chances.
