Hayley Baker and Jessica Hansen dominate at the Australian State Teams Age SC Championships
Hayley Baker and Jessica Hansen of Victoria (VIC) prevailed in the finals of Girls 400m Individual Medley (IM) and 100m breast-stroke in Girls 15-16 years old category, on final day of 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships. The meet ended on September 19, after its’ final session at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
Other than these two events, the session also included 100m back-stroke and 4*100m freestyle relay in Girls 15-16 years old age group.
The 16-year-old Baker overpowered the efforts of her following swimmer and submitted a wonderful effort of 4 minutes and 43.06 seconds. She maintained a lead of 4.19 seconds over her closest competitor, Taylor McKeown of Queensland (QLD), who stepped on the podium for silver medal, by reporting a time of 4 minutes and 47.25 seconds. McKeown was followed by her team-member, Tianni Gilmour, who was 2.65 seconds slower than her and appeared on the podium for bronze medal by finishing her swim in a time of 4 minutes and 49.90 seconds.
In the meantime, the 16-year-old Hansen displayed a sterling effort in the 100m breast-stroke, where she improved the age group mark by clocking a time of 1 minute and 07.83 seconds. Her time was considerably under the previous mark of 1 minute and 09.78 seconds, made by McKeown in 2010. The gold medallist was followed by defending champion, McKeown, as she remained 2.13 seconds slower and settled on the podium for silver medal, with an effort of 1 minute and 09.96 seconds.
The third spot of the race was obtained by Hanna Beighton of QLD, who was just 0.03 seconds slower than her competitor and posted a time of 1 minute and 09.99 seconds.
Subsequently, Adelaide Hart of Western Australia (WA) dominated the final of 100m back-stroke. Hart captured gold medal of the event in a nice time of 1 minute and 00.99 seconds. She was followed by Hayley Baker of VIC and Rebecca Booth of New South Wales (NSW), who earned second and third positions with timings of 1:01.76 and 1:01.90 minutes, respectively.
Meanwhile, team A of NSW claimed gold medal of 4*100m freestyle relay by clocking a top ranked time of 3 minutes and 41.95 seconds. The squad was followed by QLD and NSW team B, who remained prominently away and reached the podium for silver and bronze medals with timings of 3:43.08 and 3:48.25 minutes, respectively.
The arena cheered for the heart-winning efforts of all age group competitors. In addition, the session completed after the conclusion of all scheduled events, while the winners received their medals after the session.
