Hayley Turner to ride on Cavaleiro in the prestigious Investec Derby at Epsom
Jockey Hayley Turner will be the second female to participate in the Investec Derby after Alex Greaves, who was the first and rode on Portuguese Lil in 1996.
The rider’s mount for the race will be the talented Cavaleiro, who is trained by Marcus Tregoning for owner Guy Brook in the Investec Derby at Epsom on 2nd June, 2012.
Referring to her participation in the event, the rider stated that:
"I just got a call from Mr Tregoning and he said I could ride the horse for Mr Guy Brooks in the Derby, so that was very kind of him."
The son of Sir Percy, out of mare Khibraat, was the mount for Turner in theWeatherbys Private Banking Maiden Stakes at Chepstow on 24th August, 2011, where he raced as a favourite with a winning shot of 2-7.
The skillful jockey guided the runner to victory as he finished 3 lengths ahead Clive Cox’s charge, Dont Take Me Alive.
In his most recent start, Cavaleiro finished third, 6 ¾ lengths adrift of the winner in the Group 3 Betfred Derby Trial Stakes at Lingfield, where he was paired with Richard Mullen.
The chestnut colt has an impressive record for his age, and is likely to add to his victories over the course of time, and in six starts, he is 2-1-3. Talking about Cavaleiro’s record, Hayley Turner stated:
"I won on him and then he won the Haynes, Hanson & Clark for Richard Mullen when I was off injured. He ran a good race around Lingfield on the all-weather, which probably wasn't ideal, and it's really nice to have a ride in the race.
The jockey stated that he is the kind of runner who has flexible temperamentm who can adapt to different surfaces since he is a “strong traveler.”
Turner is ecstatic about her participation in the mega-event, and does not feel the need to hide it since she feels that participating in the Investec Derby is a source of pride for any jockey, male or female.
