Hanyesworth addresses issues in interview
Controversial defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth spoke out about his time with the Washington Redskins in an interview with ESPN's Sara Walsh. Haynesworth, an all-pro player
with the Tennessee Titans, signed a $100 million free agent contract with the Redskins in 2009.
"I wanted to be the greatest defensive lineman ever to play the game," Haynesworth said.
Since then, Haynesworth has been in the news. However, he hasn't been in the new for positive performances.
He has failed numerous conditioning tests, has experienced a change from Jim Zorn's 4-3 defence to Mike Shanahan's 3-4 defence, has had multiple verbal confrontations with
Shanahan, and he has also been criticized for not playing 100 percent.
The former University of Tennessee star even hesitated before cashing in on his $21 million bonus that he received on 1 April.
"Yeah, check sat at my house for a couple weeks before I cashed it," Haynesworth said. "I was weighing my options about what I should do. Do you want to take this? Do you
want to commit yourself to playing a 3-4 [defense]? Do you want to go somewhere else and try again?”
Much has been said about Haynesworth during his time on the field. Several NFL analysts have questioned his desire, stating that he has shown a lack of enthusiasm on the
field. Others think he is past his prime at the age of 29.
"Some people think I'm off my rocker," he said. "Some think I'm just a guy who doesn't want to do anything. Some think I'm a nice guy. Lot of different perceptions but if
you meet me you will understand I am a good person."
Haynesworth went on to say that he is in good standing with the new coach.
"Everyone thinks we're standing in a long hallway, with gun holsters, ready to draw on each other," Haynesworth said. "Nothing like that. We're completely fine."
The Redskins (2-1) travel to face Mike Vick and the Eagles on Sunday.
