Hazleton Area defeats the Meyers boys volleyball team in District 2 Class AAA Championship final
The Cougars had the time of their life as they secured yet another District 2 Class AAA Championship recently.
This is the second consecutive time that the Cougars have won the title. This time around, the team that the Cougars handed out a defeat to was the Meyers boys volleyball team.
The match between the two teams went on to five long and thrilling sets at the end of which the Cougars were able to boast a 3-2 victory. By the time that the Cougars had started celebrating their well earned win by thumping each other on the back and Meyers
were heading out of the court with heads hung low, the scoreboard displayed the following final set scores, 25-12, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25 and 15-6.
The win resulted from a well coordinated team effort put in by the Cougars. Both the attack as well as the defence of Hazleton Area was perfectly synchronized to keep the pressure on Meyers. The Cougar hitters kept on raining down relentless kills on their
opponents who were doing a poor job defending, whereas the defence of the Cougars was not letting any easy points through.
The Cougar players that stood prominent in the entire match were Trevor Marzalek and Dwaine Gilley. Gilley was able to post the highest number of kills for his team by hitting 36 of them. Along with that, Gilley also contributed by adding 26 digs as well
as 11 blocks. Gilley also kept the scoreboard ticking by making five points on the serve.
Gilley was helped by his teammate Marzalek who made his presence felt by registering 18 kills of his own. He also contributed by making 18 digs in all. Marzalek helped the Cougars score points by making nine of them on service while participating in four
blocks.
On the Meyers side, the players that actively took part in putting up a competition against the Cougars were Derek Gentry as well as Matt James. Gentry were able to challenge his opponents by posting 10 kills in all.
Not only that, he also made 15 digs and scored two points on service aces. Gentry were helped by James who kept the Meyers side of the scoreboard ticking by registering three kills. He also made four digs for his team.
“The guys took over in the last set. It's the most fun we had the whole season. Both teams were really into it,” Hazleton Area head coach Chris Fallabel said. “The seniors gave everything they had. They took control in the fifth game and said there was no
way they were losing. I'm proud of them for fighting at the end of the season to get three straight wins.”
