  1. You will need a HD converter for your normal tv sets. Or you can simply buy an HD tv.

You will HAVE to get one or the other when everything migrates to HD

    HD converter or HD tv.

Blu ray is just a premium video format. I wouldn't worry about that. The important thing is getting a TV that supports at least HD. Good Luck.

  2. ScopeU,Has good answers every post so listen to him.He knows what hes talkin about.

  3. blu ray is so much better the picture quality is so much higher that hd dvd and when you go to the movie shop how many hd-dvds do you see and if you see any there are way more blu ray discs out on display as they are better at marketing.

  4. Ok, I will try to keep it as simple as possible...

Yes you will need a Blu-Ray Disc player, regular DVD players will not play Blu-Ray discs. The discs all look the same, but the similarities end there. You can't play a DVD movie in a CD player right? Same thing here....you can't play a high def disc on a standard def player, even if your dvd player up-converts to high def, it's not the same.

You will need a new TV only if...

    -You have a non HDTV

-You have an HDTV that only supports 1080i and want to enjoy full 1080p resolution. (The difference between i and p is that i only shows half the lines on the screen at once while p shows them all at once giving you a sharper picture.

And by the way, HD DVD is officially an obsolete format as of last week. Blu-Ray will be the only way to get your movies in high def from now on.

  5. Blu-ray is a premium priced niche format offering 1080p video and high quality audio as an alternative to DVD.  Some people feel DVD will be replaced by Blu-ray, but this is unlikely.

Blu-ray disks (same size and appearance as DVDs) require a different player (currently only the PS3 is recommended) currently costing $300 or more).  Blu-ray players will play  and upconvert normal DVDs to near HD quality (as will less expensive stand alone upconverting DVD players).

Blu-ray disks (depending where you are) cost from $5 -$20 more than DVDs.

The minimum requirement to benefit (some improvement over DVD) from Blu-ray are an HDTV and HDMI connectivity. Full benefit requires a larger 1080p HDTV and a mid to high end audio system.

See the link for an approximation of how the picture compares in the two formats (HD disk and DVD -- mouse-over on each picture and the image changes to the other format).  The specific examples are HD DVD vs DVD (but Blu-ray and HD DVD give almost identical picture quality so the example is still valid).

    EDIT

"Onelichr... " is wrong about you having to buy an HDTV. The switch in Feb 2009 in the US (other dates in other countries) is to DIGITAL(from analog) NOT to HD. HD programming is an optional, and extra cost option, unless you can receive local stations via an HD antenna. You can keep your existing TV if you wish by adding a digital tuner (A $40 govt subsidy is available).

  6. I find a link for Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD, you can have a look:

i think the best is Blue Ray....has better titles.....and there is a Sony which is like $400 bucks really affordable compare to HD DVD players...

This is a deal for Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray Player., you can have a look:

  7. This is the new type of media that is to replace regular dvds.  Both can hold more information on the disc (bluray can hold more than hd dvd.  Hd dvd lost the race to bluray so in order to play bluray discs you will need a bluray player and a tv that can view 1080p (this will be posted on the specs and advertised) to get the most out of the bluray.  It will be some time before the standard dvds be put to rest.

  8. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray were two new types of DVD competing to be the next step in home video media.  These were created for the demand of high definition capable media for full high definition 1080p resolution TVs (HDTV).

Scratch HD-DVD, it's over for them.

Blu-Ray will one day replace DVD as the standard home movie media player.  One day you'll go to a video store and pick up a Blu-Ray movie instead of a DVD, but it will be a long time from now so no worries.  Get a Blu-Ray player or PS3 when they come down in price and do not throw out your DVDs as these will play on Blu-Ray players.  You should see it more as expanding DVDs capabilities.  Your DVDs are not being replaced like VHS was.

    Step 1:  Buy a 40" or bigger 1080p HDTV

    Step 2:  Buy a Blu-Ray player

Optional:  Buy a home theater with HDMI.  Blu-Ray players will be included with these at some point, it's only a matter of time.

  9. Well HD DVD just lost about a week ago. So if you buy that then you are screwed.

HD DVD / Blu-Ray is a format war much like th VHS / Beta tapes.

You will need a new TV to get the full potential from your blu-ray(I dont include HD DVD because of the above)

you will also need a new play called a blu-ray player. The cheapest blu-ray out is the Sony PS3 (40GB).

Wait 6 more months for prices to come down.
