Hdmi cable for hd cable box?

I just got hd cable box from time warner and they had cables for it but the guy asked if I had a hdmi cable. I was just wondering if it would make a hug differnce or not if I would go out and buy a hdmi cable. Also if it is hooked up already and I unhook it and hook it up to my hdmi cable will it be all screwed up.
