  1. First off, you should decide on a plasma or LCD. The rear projection DLP tvs (the ones with the color wheel) are quickly disappearing (they're good TVs but consumer demand for rear projection is very low). The bulbs are still expensive to replace. I haven't seen a rear projection LCD in a long time.

A quick decision maker on LCD vs Plasma is if your going to play video games on it or not. If you are, you should choose an LCD. Plasmas have a better picture but they still suffer from burn-in (they've gotten better and the new ones claim to be video game friendly but the manufacturers still don't warranty for burn-in)

If your not going to play video games, plasma is probably a better choice. The only real downside is that they tend to have screen glare but if you have shades, you'll be fine.

All the new TVs have hdmi but you'll want one with several hdmi inputs (at least one for cable/sat and one for dvd/blueray).

Top mainstream brands for plasma are Pioneer (including the Elite which is thier top of the line) and Panasonic (the Viera models are thier top of the line). For LCD, Sharp Aquos, Toshiba, and Sony are amoung the best (I personally don't care for Sony but many would disagree).

As far as longevity, both plasma and LCD have similar life spans (60,000 + hours).

  2. The best is pioneer elite

  3. i have the Sony XBR21080p 60" LCD rear projection hdtv and it looks amazing. i use component cables but i bet it would look even better with hdmi. plus it is a fantastic value. it costs only $2500.
