We just bought a new Phillips 52' flat screen tv and our Surround sound we had won't connect because the surround sound doesn't have hdmi? apparently we need a new surround sound with hdmi, so i was looking at them and most that I've saw have hdmi outputs but not inputs? will it work if we just have output? or do i need to buy one with both outputs and inputs????

i'm confused!

  1. Did you connect a HDMI cable from a DVD, cable or satellite box to your TV?

You need to send the audio from the player, cable/satellite box to your surround sound system.  The cable/sat box should have a SPDIF (Orange RCA connector) or a Toslink (Optical Audio connector) that you should be able to connect to your surround sound.

If your surround sound system does not have digital audio input, either SPDIF or Toslink, it is time to upgrade.

I have the Onkyo TX-SR605.  It works great and is a reasonable price.

  2. you don't have to use the hdmi to hook up your tv to your existing system.you can hook your new tv to the amp using the red/whte/yellow plugs. if your amp has a red/blue/green output you can also run the to you tv.then you can take your time buying a new amp after researching what you really need.
