and im not sure if hdmi cables(best picture quality) produce sound aswell?

does it??

because, unless a ps3 has its own speaker ports how am i supposed to get the audio on the lcd moniter with out speakers?

  1. yes it can produce both video AND audio. One of its many purposes is to cut down on the mess of wires usually found lurking behind audio components. And, that is why it looks thicker than other electronics cables.

here, go to wikipedia.com and search for hdmi. it most likely tell you what you want to know about it.

  2. Jaezo52 is mostly right, except that the cable is not thicker to carry audio.   The audio information is carried on the same signal lines as the video.  This is not a problem because there are periods of time between frames where video data does not need to be transmitted, giving the audio (a much lower data rate stream) time enough to get its bits through.

    Edit 4/5/2008:

About agb90spr's comment about the audio not being multiplexed.  That is incorrect.  It is multiplexed.  It's carried on the same signal wires as the video but at a different time.  I quote here from the wikipedia page:

    "TMDS channel

The Transition Minimized Differential Signaling (TMDS) channel:

    * Carries video, audio, and auxiliary data via one of three modes called the Video Data Period, the Data Island Period, and the Control Period. During the Video Data Period, the pixels of an active video line are transmitted. During the Data Island period (which occurs during the horizontal and vertical blanking intervals), audio and auxiliary data are transmitted within a series of packets. The Control Period occurs between Video and Data Island periods."

  3. Sounds like everyone is answering the HDMI question and not the monitor question. HDMI is capable of doing both audio and sound. BUT if your monitor has no sound capabilities (whcih most pc monitors do not)it will not do you much good. You will need to go to componet cables and hook the video to the monitor and the audio cables to some sort of receiver to get the sound.

  4. The other answers are only partly right and incomplete.

HDMI carries digital HD video and multichannel sound on a single cable.

It ISN'T thicker than others necessarily (only if made with thicker wires) and is always thinner than the multiple cables it replaces

It DOESN'T multiplex the signals ... audio and video are carried on seperate wires inside the (normally) 19 connector cable (See link)

Now turning to sound. Very few monitors include speakers, and you really want something better anyway. What's the point of paying for HD gaming and surround sound input and then using tinny speakers? You may also want to play DVDs or Blu-ray disks .. so you may as well do this right. Right?

The PS3 has different outputs so, while video and audio can be sent via a single HDMI cable, they can also be sent separately. For example, video to the monitor (assuming an HDMI input) and surround audio via HDMI or optical to a receiver or powered speakers (e.g. surround computer speakers).

The easiest way to get sound is via an HDMI cable to an A/Vamplifier and surround speakers, but computer speakers (which contain their own amplifier) are another option.

If you only want stereo you can connect via the PS3 A/V multi out port, but if you want surround you need to verify that speakers have an optical input (or digital coax input, but then you will need to buy an optical to coax adapter) or you won't be able to connect.

See the 2nd link for info on connecting to the PS3. The 3rd link is to a surround computer speaker setup that accepts optical input.

Finally, you don't need to spend more than $10-$15 on an HDMI cable (a good online source is Monoprice.com).

So .. there's the info. Hope it helps.
