They have an inflated opinion of how good they are because they have a non-critical media that tends to believe what they are told rather investigating for themselves.

An example of their inflated opinion of themselves is the military. They spend the most on the military but it is neither the largest, the best trained, the most experienced or the best lead. (Pat Tilman, Matty Hull). The money goes on latest technology not the people that use it.

They also have an advanced capitalist system that means it they are capable of making huge profit of the back of the unfortunates in their country (no universal health care, poor education esp of ethnic minorities) but use that money to try and sell in other countries. Listen to the radio and the big bucks are behind US bands but they rarely are the best quality.

They speak English and that is understood by most of the rest of the world,    

They don't have an opinion on other places as they don't know where places are. When I was in the US I was asked if I was Iraq.
