He Chong excels in Men's 3m Springboard semi-final meet: Day six - World Diving Championships
He Chong of China excelled his performance in the Men’s 3m Springboard diving event on day six of the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised 14th World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, July 21, 2011.
Chong, who qualified as the second best diver into the semi-final behind Qin Kai, won the hearts of crowd by overwhelming Kai’s effort in the semi-final. The Chinese diver defeated his strongest competitor, Kai, with a difference of only 0.25 points. He
achieved a remarkable score of 523.50 points for the top qualification berth. With his laudable effort, Chong has become the favourite candidate to secure the gold medal of the meet.
Chong was followed by Kai, who failed to sustain his finest spot in the second round and entered the finals as second best diver, by gaining a total of 523.25 points. In addition, Kai maintained a lead of 54.75 points over his closest competitor, Ilya Zakharov
of Russia, who sustained his third highest score in the second round and entered the finals with 470.50 points.
Julian Sanchez of Mexico, who was the eighth qualifying diver, displayed a phenomenal effort in the semi-final and moved up to the fourth spot, with a score of 467.15 points. He was followed by Troy Dumais of USA, who obtained a score of 466.80 points for
the fifth best qualification spot. Ukraine’s Oleksiy Prygorov stayed almost eighteen points behind Dumais and managed to secure the sixth qualification spot with a score of 448.25 points.
Russia’s Evgeny Kuznetsov, who earned sixth qualification spot in semi-final, was unable to maintain his position and dropped to seventh position, as he managed a score of 447.65 points. He was followed by Yahel Castillo of Mexico, who secured the eighth
qualification spot in the final round, by scoring 445.15 points.
The session concluded after the semi-final of Men’s 3m event, while the arena was pleased with the incredible performance of Chong, who defeated the arena’s favourite and became China’s top hope for the gold medal in final round.
