He Went Whoosh lands the Coral Regency
He Went Whoosh (7-1) provided spectators at Hove with an excellent show as he landed the £8000 Coral Regency on Tuesday night across the 695m.
The Claude Gardiner-trained charge began his Coral Regency campaign with a suited trap-six start in earlier trial stakes - a race which saw him take the early lead but fail to hold off the sheer pace of Tony Gifkins’ Capel Smiley.
The wide runner had since been drawn in unfavoured traps, yet remained in the competition with a low profile only to be gifted with trap six once again for the final.
A final in which Whoosh was once again quickly away, clocking a sectional time of 14.01, which was closely matched by Crown Rover (5-2 favourite), who remained persistent but lost valuable time due to early crowding.
Capel Smiley (3-1) continued to run on just as he did in the trial stakes, but Whoosh denied him the chance to create a déjà vu scenario by clinching the victory by a short-head to clock 41.26secs.
Dean Childs’ Bush Paddy (7-2) was also a good runner, managing to recover from early crowding to run on and apply further pressure, making the race even more intense. The close-fought nature of the race is obvious with a glance at the times of the top three, who all clocked times just one spot apart.
A great result for the local handler Gardiner whose charge hasn’t been involved in many major competitions but should very likely be returning to Oxford next month to defend his Williamhill.com Cesarwitch title.
Williamhill.com currently also sponsor the English Derby which kicked off last week and has already provided a lot of entertaining races and also the usual shockers. Eye Onthe Storm’s career coming to an end after he damaged his hock in the first round was a big blow - but the show must go on and the second round will get underway this Friday and Saturday.
