“He needs to take pleasure in the bike again,” Luca Guercilena
Team RadioShack-Nissan General Manager, Luca Guercilena has noted that Andy Schleck had to leave the 2012 night mare behind and should start enjoy cycling again as he used to before.
He explained that the only way for the Luxembourg professional cyclist to find his old esteem is to try and take pleasure in what he is best at, instead of trying too hard.
“He needs to take pleasure in the bike again,” Guercilena told Le Quotidien.
“This year, for different reasons, that wasn’t the case and that’s normal, I think. Fränk and Andy always had the feeling of losing something with the merger”.
“[Team backer] Flavio Becca and Johan Bruyneel’s idea was to improve the team but psychologically, those who had been there for the creation of the team had the sense of losing something”.
Guercilena joined the team as Sports Director in 2011 and had his first training camp as Manager in Luxembourg earlier after Johan Bruyneel’s exit.
Johan Bruyneel took over the team’s reigns in 2012 after the merger of Team RadioShack and Team Leopard Trek.
However, USADA’s detailed investigation into Lance Armstrong and his associates related Bruyneel to the cartel and accused him of trafficking and administering UCI banned substance previously in his team.
Garcia, who seems to be enjoying his new job as the Team Manager noted that the team will be built around Andy in July and the cyclist will ride the Ardennes Classics and the Tour de France.
He also noted that the 27-year-old will also ride the Santos Tour Down Under, Tour de Haut-Var, Tirreno-Adriatico, Tour Mediterraneen and the Tour of Basque Country as part of his classics campaign.
“The idea of having a different programme isn’t bad in itself for certain races and that might even benefit Fränk in some circumstances because he’s also a rider capable of winning big races,” Guercilena said.
Schleck finished second during the 2009, 2010 and 2011 versions of the race but Contador’s disqualification earned him the overall spot at the Tour de France 2010.
The cyclist could not bag any victories in the 2012 season because of his fitness issues and a knee procedure earlier in May also prevented him from riding the Tour de France 2012.
