x  [first number]

x+1   [next number]

x+2    [third number]

When you add them together, they make 579, so your equation looks like this:

x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) = 579

Which becomes:

3x + 3 = 579

Solve:

3x = 579 - 3

3x = 576   [subtracting 3 from both sides]

x = 576/3  [dividing both sides by 3]

x = 192

So, the numbers are 192, 193, and 194.

Add these  and equate with 579 to find the value of x.

Because you know the numbers are consecutive, subtract three from 579. This accounts for the increases between the numbers you are looking for. You are looking for x, which is the lowest number in the sequence of three, and to get the other two numbers (you know to be in sequence) you will solve for X+1 and X+2. I'll come back to that in a minute.

So you have 579-3= 576. Divide this number by 3 because you're looking for 3 consecutive numbers.

So you have 576/3= 192. This is the first of the three numbers in the sequence. To get the next two you simply add 1 (193) and 2 (194) -- just like the 3 you subtracted earlier.
