He wanted me to buy the Sony $399 blue ray player instead of the Playstation 3...?

Should I have? I am still considering which blue ray machine to buy...

I saw a playstation 3 at Blockbuster Video hooked up to a lcd 37 inch tv. It looked great, I have so much more than that it would look awesome on my tv.

But the Sony or the Playstation 3?

Get the Playstation 3.  It plays games as well.

Assuming you really want a Blu-ray player now (personally I think it is too soon to buy since prices will come down)... the PS3 is the best player out there right now. The only reason to buy a stand alone player (e,g, the Sony) is because you really want a player that matches the rest of your equipment. However, the PS3 is not only arguably the best Blu-ray player, but because of it's other capabilities is the best value for the money.
