Head coach Greg Schiano presented 'unique opportunity' for spending big says Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Mark Dominik
Tampa Bay Buccaneers were faced with empty seats at the Raymond James Stadium and fan disenchantment with the franchise as the team continued to reel from one defeat to the next last season.
The Buccaneers lost their final 10 games of the season in a row and ended up with a poor 4-12 record that led to the firing of former head coach, Raheem Morris by the owners.
Tampa Bay brought in Rutgers University coach, Greg Schiano to lead a new revolution in the franchise and sought to give fans a treat ahead of the offseason by spending big on marquee names in this year’s free agency.
The Buccaneers did not hold back on spending big in free agency this year as they took advantage of a huge space in their salary cap to bring in three big name players on fat contracts.
Wide receiver, Vincent Jackson, guard, Carl Nicks and cornerback, Eric Wright, arrived at the franchise to add experience and fresh blood to the roster.
Speaking about the big splashes made by the franchise in free agency and doing away with the austerity of recent years, general manager, Mark Dominik, said according to the
Tampa Tribune.
"We wanted to show not only the community but (the rest of the team that) with coach Schiano everything here is really brand new. It was a unique opportunity.''
Schiano’s arrival has led to a complete turnaround in how the Buccaneers prepare for the offseason with discipline and team spirit taking priority.
Dominik also signed some big talent in the drafts and the roster on paper looks highly capable of challenging for the National Football Conference (NFC) South division championship as well as the playoffs.
The general manager also talked about quarterback, Josh Freeman, who regressed considerably like the rest of the team last season.
"He's an extremely competitive person and this offseason, all on his own, he's already lost 15 pounds, he looks like a different person. And even though he's still a baby in the NFL, he knows that life in the NFL can be short and so he's done everything
he can to devote himself not only to being a better football player but to learning the new system. I'm very encouraged that he takes his job that seriously.''
Tampa Bay are targeting big goals in the upcoming season and the pressure is on Schiano to get the best out of his talented roster.
