Head coach Tan Kim Her says Koo Kien Keat - Tan Boon Heong will train officially under Pang Cheh
Malaysia’s top stars in Men’s Doubles category, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong are officially granted the permission to train under Pang Cheh Chang, the doubles coach in national setup of Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).
The players are under the spell of a bad patch of their career, as they are yet to win a major title for the last 20 months. They failed to perform well at the World Championships which forced BAM to review and make changes in the coaching structure.
Rexy Mainaky, the former chief coach of Doubles’ squad, has been confined to the position of head coach for Women and Mixed Doubles. Tan Kim Her replaced Rexy and has officially allowed Koo Kien and Tan Boon to train under Cheh Chang.
Kim Her said, “Both the elite and back-up men’s doubles players will now train together in the first hour of the training session every day. After that, Kien Keat-Boon Heong will have a more personalised training under Cheh Chang.”
The head coach also expressed that Cheh Chang will remain in touch and update him with the regular training of shuttlers. The target of this initiative is to make Koo Kien and Tan Boon capable enough to secure a medal at the 2012 London Olympics.
Recently, Koo Kien and Tan Boon again failed to reach the final of the 2011 China Masters Super Series, as they lost to Lee Yong Dae and Jung Jae Sung in the Men’s Doubles quarter-final of the event. The duo participated in the first tournament without Rexy
as their coach.
Cheh Chang is confident to improve the shuttlers while working on all their weaknesses and he is keen to secure them a good position at Olympic Games. The coach said, “They asked me to train them yesterday (Saturday) and today even though it’s their birthdays
(Kien Keat and Boon Heong will be 26 and 24 respectively). They are very committed. Hopefully, they will give a better account of themselves in Japan.”
World Number Five duo of Koo Kien and Tan Boon will participate in the 2011 Japan Open Super Series, which will kick-off in Tokyo, Japan, on September 20.
