Head coach Tan Kim Her wants to elevate skills of Men’s Doubles shuttlers without changing pairs
Malaysia’s recently appointed head coach for Men’s Doubles squad, Tan Kim Her wants to keep on working with the same pairs in the squad without changing the partnership combination. He wants to train them and elevate their skills to produce one more top-class
duo, which will be parallel to top seeds, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.
Kim Her replaced Rexy Mainaky, who was the chief coach of Men’s Doubles and is now coaching the Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles squad of Malaysia. The new coach is appointed as a result of the bad performances of shuttlers under the supervision of Rexy.
Now, Kim Her has started working with shuttlers in training sessions. He is well-aware of the presence of Goh V Shem – Lim Khim Wah and Mohd Lufti Zaim – Vountus Indra Mawan in the Doubles squad, along with top seeds Kien Keat and Boon Heong.
The coach wants these shuttlers to work hard and attain the level of top seeds. Currently, Lim Khim and Goh V are ranked at Number 47, whereas, Lufti Zaim and Indra Mawan are placed at Number 59 in the Men’s Doubles world rankings.
Kim Her recently formed a new partnership between Tan Wee Kiong and Hoon Thien How. The coach said, “Thien How-Wee Kiong will be a permanent partnership ... I do not want to break up the pairs anymore. I do not expect them to qualify for the London Olympics
next year because they have not even played in a competition.”
He further added, “However, I believe they have the potential to step up and become the number two doubles pair in the country. I will send them to the Denmark, France and German Opens next month. Hopefully, they’ll be able to cause some upsets.”
The coach was assigned with the task to build the confidence of shuttlers and make them competent for the 2012 London Olympics. At present, World Number five ranked duo of Kien Keat and Tan Boon are Malaysia’s best bet to win a medal at the London Olympics,
in the Men’s Doubles category.
