Head-hit: League office slaps $21K fine on Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin - NFL News
Tennessee Titans safety Michael Griffin has been penalised by the National Football League (NFL) for his helmet-to-helmet hit on the Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Michael Jenkins.
Although he has avoided suspension, a fine of $21000 has been slapped on him over the hit at the time when the player was seen defenceless, as pointed out by the league.
There is not further information at Jenkins’ end by either the team or his agent, if he has suffered a head injury, but apparently nature of the fine reflects he was a subject to a vicious hit by Griffin.
He was helped on the sidelines and could not finish the game.
It is possible that Jenkins has successfully escaped the possibility of concussion, but the levy by the league office is to stress the point that it takes players’ safety serious now.
Some commentators believe that the hype created around the players’ protection from injuries, particularly from concussion during each game, has made players a bit cautious in going rough against the opponent.
This is pertinent to mention here that the league office has recently made the remarks of Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator a subject of investigation to see if they misconstrued an urge to his players to deliberately hit and hurt their opponents, although
the coach regretted his bad choice words.
The NFL is walking on a tight rope as far as players’ safety is concerned. The office has been under fire from all quarters over its controversial modus operandi to handle the issue. Some players have accused commissioner Roger Goodell of abusing his powers
and unnecessarily penalising players. The particular reference in context of these remarks was the infamous bounty scandal that led to suspension of a number of players and officials.
The Titans themselves have become a part of discussion around players’ safety, first for their defensive coordinator’s remarks and now for Griffin’s hit on the Vikings’ player.
