  1. If this is your first camera either one is good. It is very much a matter of what feels best in your hands. On paper they are fairly comparable. Again, if this is your first camera, don't spend $1000 on the body and $149 on a lens. If you spent$600 on the camera and $600 on the lens you will get results you will be happier with. The lens quality contributes more to the quality of the final image than the body does! Good Luck!

  2. The D80 is already dated, but features advanced controls and ergonomics that the EOS 450D does not.

The 450D has live-view; but its build quality is that of a cheap plastic toy with a horrible grip. The D80 is a lot sturdier and more refined.

It all comes down to what your preference is. Go to a store and feel them out for yourself. The one that fits best in your hand is the one to go for.
