Question:

Heading to the Adirondacks for some tough hiking...

I am planning to spend a week in the Adirondacks to get away from real life for a bit. I am looking for some advice on where to camp and set up a sort of "base camp" for the hikes I want to tackle.

I want to do the Great Range, repeat a series of peaks I've done in the past that starts with the Gothics, and also tackle Wright/Algonquin/Iriquois.

I would really like something that is more remote, but with good access to trails and other people if I have any trouble. It would also be nice if fires were allowed...not sure the regulations around the area I am planning to hike. I'm an experienced hiker, but have never planned a multi-day trip on my own.

Any thoughts on state campsites or how to plan my first true backpacking trip with campsites I find on my own?

Thanks!

  1. my usual "base camp" is the ADK loj--for a campground, it is very primitive and nicely wooded/secluded and also the start of the wright/algonquin trailheads you spoke of--also the only place that allows fires within the high peaks area...to hit gothics you woould have to drive down I-73 for a bit...beyond algonquin there are some backcountry lean-to's (following the skylight trailhead i believ) ...i recently did gothics, sawteeth and armstrong as loop and dont recall any backcountry sites on that trail--closest would probably be johns brook lodge
