this type of headliner cannot be fixed as you tried to do

The complete headliner must come out.  undo all trim pcs. carefully remove headliner from truck out of the passenger side. Remove cloth, scrape or sand off  old foam to prepare for new cloth. A new fresh layer of foam backed headliner cloth ( available at upholstery shops in various colors etc.) Re glue the foam to headliner with correct adhesive like scotch 77 spray. Carfully smooth cloth out to wards sides from center.  trim. Re install in reverse order.
