Question:

Headscarve ban at universities?

I know Turkey strongly supports secularism, but what I don't understand is how banning women from wearing the headscarve at university enforces that.

Way I personally see it, it discrimates against those students who want to wear a headscarve and prevents them from having an education. By that age people are mature enough to make their own decisions so how does telling women what they can and can't wear affect their education and prevent Turkey from being secular? Doesn't it go against one's freedom?

Can someone please explain the mentality behind it?

Thank you.

  1. Excuse me but i can't understand how this has become your problem! if you are not turkish how dare you trying to oppose your opinions to us. i don't care what you english think about our law . some of Britain's muslim citizens do not want to relate to the British legal system.Muslim population in the UK wants to deal their problems with sharia law , now tell us if you would want that! if anyone don't like Turkiye they can leave. read xtreme l 's answer that s whats behind headscarf. that's all game. all big game. and all lies.

Turkey is secular and will remain secular.

  2. Don't be fooled by the current president. It is not going against their freedom. Why is it so hard to understand. The government does not want religion clashing with each other. Religion can not be mixed into politics they are completely different and think about this.. If they allowed headscarves in universitys all the closed women would close up... but the open one might feel pressured and open compared to them and feel the stares of the religious people. They will feel pressured and close up. So... do you think that is freedom? being pressured to close up?

So what if you can't wear it to government run areas? Just wear a wig or wait untill you get married to close up. Whats the rush?

  3. Secular nation=removal of ALL religion and religious symbols(headscarf, cross, buddist meditation beads ect) from the running of a country.

    case closed.

dont like it? move to a nation that allows it.

    @ ExTreMe

get lost u sharia bin ladin loving extemist.

    LOL @ REVERIE!

im sorry dear but turks and turkey are NOT the same as iranians and iran! dont go there whatsoever.turks and turkey are FAR more secure about being secular and democratic and wester or whatever, than iranians, please dont compare todays iranian youth to turkish youth, cos its not the same atall.

  4. I understand your confusion.

But in order to understand what this means in Turkey, you have to know Turkish political history. Otherwise, it won't make any sense, at all. Every country has different circumstances.

First of all, you should know that headscarve ban on Universities is not a new ban. And Turkey's being a secular state is not today's news. Turkey defined itself as a secular state since the beginning of its constitution of the republic. That is, 84 years.

Now, in Turkey, majority of the people who wear headscarves belong to a group, they wear the headscarve as a political symbol and discriminate people who do not resemble to themselves.

Now, first of all, Turkey always recognized "individuals" rather than "groups".

Secondly, Turkey sees the schools and universities as "religion-free zones" where citizens of the future are educated.

Thirdly, Turkish education system gives emphasis on equality.

Moreover, headscarves are considered in Turkey as instruments of propaganda for an intolerant version of Islam and as an oppression of women.

This ban must be viewed in these contexts.

  6. headscarf = SWASTIKA

can you ask this question to Germans why do they not allow wearing clothes with swastikas on it?

  7. You really should know more about the political background of AKP to make a better judgement. You can't decide with ideals, as AKP is far from ideal.

To cut a long story short, AKP is working hard to turn a secular state into a religious one. Blind liberals have supported it, only to see, too late, the real face of the party. And the establishment, with the support of the 53% of the AKP opposing population, is struggling to keep Turkey secular and modern.

Did you ever wonder if the scarved ladies have the freedom to take their scarves off? Are they really free from the suppression of their families and tarikats (religious sects). THAT'S the key point.

  8. They see headscarf as a symbol of "political Islam" and not a simple cover or so.

It's what they say to support banning.

  9. What you are saying is right and this is how civilized countries think. But remember that Turkey has a history of dictators and the people are used to yeilding to a demagogue. Full 'freedom of expression' will end up in an islamic revolution, for the turks are at heart muslim, even though they chant out mottos of secularism. I'll give you the example of my own country, which is so much like Turkey, at least in history. In 1979, the people of Iran chanting freedom and democracy in street protests, overthrew the shah, and frankly my dear, my generation is reaping all the benefits. Look at us young Iranians and look at the young turks. We are far far away from being 'mature' enough of making our own decisions!!!
