Question:

Healing stitches in finger tip?

I cut half my finger tip and had to have it stitched back together (through the nail!) I know that for a wound to heal you have to leave it open to air, but it's a finger on my dominant hand. I'm scared to leave a bandage off bc I know I'm bound to hit it on something.

I work 12hr days And run a home, so leaving it off in my down time is impossible since I have no down time.

Suggestions?

  1. Well I'm glad you're optimistic (profile name). Um I actually had part of my finger tip cut off about 8 years ago. I had to take time off to let it heal (about a month).  If this recently happened I would hope you are taking some time off too. But if you can't, and have to take off the bandage I will suggest the obvious, BE VERY CAREFUL! Because it really hurts to hit it against something. Hope you feel better!

  2. I work in an ER and we tell our patients to keep the wound covered until time for their wound recheck.  This is usually in about 2-3 days.  You should keep the wound clean with antibacterial soap and keep it dry.  Change the dressing as needed, may have to be 2-3 times a day. Usually the stitches will come out of a finger in 7-10 days.  Keep it clean.  Very important.  Take your antibiotics if prescribed.  Good luck.

    PS

Also if your hands are in water wear rubber gloves.  Like when washing dishes.
