Health Advisory for the delegates of the Commonwealth Games
There are less than two weeks left for the Commonwealth Games to kick off at New Delhi, India and the health officials of the country have called for high alert due to the threat of the epidemic of dengue fever to be on rise during the next couple of weeks.
The visitors and delegates of the Commonwealth Games have been strictly advised to follow the precautionary measures in order to stay safe from dengue and swine flu. Two of the cyclists of India have already been laid down with dengue fever which is a major
setback for the country. The delegates are advised to wear full sleeved clothes and cover themselves properly.
Official of the Health and Family Welfare Ministry said during a press release, that the influenza activity in the country has already reached its apex and now is showing a declining trend.
WHO has claimed that influenza in the country has reached a post pandemic stage and there are less chances of the athletes and other delegated contracting the disease. The organization has also asked the government to bear all the charges of the consultation
and medicine for any member of the Commonwealth Games who suffers from the pandemic of the disease. The officials of the organization have also asked the health advisory in India to keep them updated about the well being of all the athletes and immediately
report to them in case of one complaining that he or she is feeling unwell.
The health advisory in India on the other hand has asked the athletes and the visitors to keep record of their health status and ascertain the health department of the Games that they have received the vaccination for the H1N1 virus. Vaccination for the
H1N1 virus was not made compulsory for the delegates and the visitors.
The advisory has asked the visitors flying from abroad to immediately report to Help Desk at the arrivals of the Delhi International Airport for help, if during their flight they face the symptoms of the flu. The symptoms include fever, running nose, uneasy
breathing and sore throat. Visitors are also asked to cover their face while coughing and sneezing so as to prevent the virus from spreading. They are also advised to use hand sanitizers after coughing and sneezing and avoid crowded places as much as they
can.
As for dengue, the health advisory official said during a press release that about 40 percent of the world population lives in areas where there are high chances of dengue transmission. And to prevent the disease from spreading and causing hindrances to
the Games, the advisory has requested visitors to bring along and use mosquito repellent creams and ointments, besides just wearing full sleeved clothes.
So far, 2100 cased of dengue fever have been discovered in the Indian capital, according to a health statistical report. The areas in India where dengue is an endemic disease include 26 states or Union territories. Outside India, at least 100 countries in
Asia, the Pacific Americas, Africa and the Caribbean are confronted by the endemic of the disease. If the visitors think they are suffering from the symptoms of the disease while travelling in India, they are advised to consult the international help desk
of the airport. The symptoms of dengue fever as listed by the health advisory include fever, headache, muscle or joint pains, pain around the eyes, rash, nausea and vomiting. Once again, the Government of India has announced free of charge consultation and
medication to any visitor or athlete who contracts dengue fever during the Commonwealth Games. Along with wearing full sleeved clothes and using mosquito repellents, the list of precautions also includes the proper closing of doors and windows so that the
mosquitoes cannot enter.
Those who have the symptoms are advised by the health department of the Commonwealth Games to not to go for self medication and should not use aspirin or ibuprofen. The visitors are asked to return to their homeland if the symptoms continue for more than
12 days.
