I am a 27 yr old legal immigrant on a work visa, I am uninsured and am looking for basic emergency coverage. My employer has a insurance program but it comes to a whopping $380 a month!!! I cant afford that. I want to find one that will cover me for the big things, hospital stay etc, the little stuff I can cover myself. I don't know where to start. Can you help and advise me?

  1. A high deductible plan would be perfect for you. With a high deductible the premiums would be much lower but you would need to pay the first $1,000 to $5,000 of your medical care depending on the deductible you select.

Your best bet is to contact a health insurance broker who can help you sort through the options available. Your choices may be limited depending on how long you have been in the US.

For example a typical broker can have access to 10 major carriers and 60 different plans just for one state.

I suggest using yellowpages.com to search for health insurance brokers in your area.

Don't bother calling your auto and home agent they specialize in property and causality insurance. You need someone that specializes in health insurance.

    Good Luck

  2. I just came across this website, you may find many useful information on health insurance quotes, hopefully may help you:

  3. OK, you're looking for major medical coverage.  Big things usually means, you have a big deductible - like the first $5,000 comes out of your pocket.   You need to talk to a local, independent agent to try to get a policy - however, it's going to be harder, unless you've been in the US a long time.  Even so, it's probably going to cost you $150 or so a month,  IF you can find someone willing to insure you.

The thing about your employer's plan - they WILL take you.  But a local agent, is the place for you to start.
