Question:

Health Insurance Problem?

We had a very good health insurance for our daughter who is a freshman. However, the university still charged us about $800 for three semesters. Since this was electrons bill payment, we didn't notice that. However, in the application, my daughter filled the information on insurance. The school said that it was not completed. But the school never told us that the application for waiver of health insurance was not completed, and never gave my daughter a letter to show that she was covered by school's insurance. Can we get the money back?

  1. You're going to have to check the university's policy/procedure on student health insurance.

Many universities require that a student show proof of having another form of health insurance, or they are automatically placed on the student policy.  If the university had a deadline to show proof and your daughter didn't comply with the deadline, then you may be stuck for the semester.

If you have documentation that your daughter provided the information by the deadline, that might be helpful.  Check the university's website - generally, they have info about the student health insurance policy.

(For example, at Berkeley, they had a deadline of July 15th.  There was a late fee for waivers submitted after July 15th, but they won't accept any waivers at all after September 15th.  http://www.uhs.berkeley.edu/Students/ins... )

  2. i dont know... u must check all the details first so u can sure of what ur paying for

  3. this is very unfair but is dependent on the rules and regulations for your state, insurance company and school. You need to start with each entity and find their rules. I can tell you getting money back in NY is very difficult as it is possible to have primary and secondary coverage.
