Health Insurance. Why do costs differ from state to state when the coverage and provider are the same?

We are a few years away from 65 and moving from Maryland to Florida. Costs for the same high deductable health coverage from our health provider will cost 5 times the amount we pay now. We are healthy and have never put in a claim. Have any of you pre-medicare seniors found an affordable provider in Florida that provides good coverage for under $6k per year?

  1. Because rates vary so much from one company to another the key is to get as many quotes as possible from various companies.

There's a free on-line service that can help you at http://www.kqzyfj.com/click-2952034-1051...

You fill out one simple on-line form and they provide you with multiple quotes from several companies. This beats calling agent after agent only to get quotes from the same insurance companies.

    Hope this helps!

  2. HETHINSURANCE DIFFER FROM STATE TO STATE BECAUSE THE DIFFERENT TAX ONE STATE TO ANOTHER AND ALSO COST OF MEDICAL IS DEFFER FROM DEVELOPED STATE UNDER DEVELOPED STATE

  3. Because the cost of care varies by zip code.

  4. A person over 50 isn't going to get a good, low deductible plan, for under $500 a month.   And maybe not a high deductible plan, either.   It's just not a reasonable price for that age bracket, even if you're in perfect health (I don't believe you've never filed a claim!  SURELY you go to the doctor?  You just haven't hit your deductible, maybe?)

I haven't seen costs vary much from state to state.  What I HAVE seen, is employer sponsored plans which pick up a chunk of the tab, making the cost to the insured less than the real cost - and the insured doesn't notice the actual cost of coverage.

  5. Health insurance is regulated by each state.  Some states require insurance plans to cover certain types of conditions or offer certain health benefits that other states don’t.  Some have rules about whether an insurance company can select or limit the kinds of doctors you can see.  Because of all these variations, as well as the differing cost of medical services in different areas, the types of plans a carrier can offer in a particular state vary, and prices vary too.

If you’re interested in finding a plan, you might want to check out my company’s website, www.ehealthinsurance.com because it allows you to put in a few details (zip code, birth day) and pull up all the plans that it offers in your area.  Typically, eHealthInsurance has a lot of plans so you can compare quite a few and see if there’s one that fits your budget.

  6. Costs differ state to state because each state is rated seperately.  Many of the states have different law or regulations on what insurance can/should/must/can't do, and as a result, each state is its own separate series of issues.

And, unfortunately, a lot of people retire to Florida.  The older a group of people, the higher the risk, and the higher the risk, the higher the cost.

Congratulations on the transfer to warmer climates!  If you are looking for a way to lower your costs and are in good health, I would suggest looking into what Blue Cross or Blue Shield has to offer in the way of Health Savings Account Compatible plans.
