Ok, so I go to the doctor once a year to get blood work done. Blood pressure, cholesterol and anemia.

Question is - At first I was taking Iron pills, 3 a day. I got my blood work done 6 months later and my anemia was ok. She said keep taking them.

Now the fun part - 2 months BEFORE my next blood work I stopped taking the iron pills. Got blood work back and I was STILL fine.

What would of happened if I would of KEPT ON taking these Iron pills, which in fact I did NOT need???

THANKS to All Who Help With This!!!

  1. Eventually your iron / ferritin stores will become depleted and you risk becoming anemic or iron deficient.  It doesn't happen in 60 days, it could take 6 months.  You need iron if you're menstruating.

  2. If you have stopped taking the iron all together I guess you will find out when you have the next work up.

It does take time for even alternatives to be removed from the body, so unless you have changed your diet to include Iron it will be guess.

One free way to find out your count is to give blood, they test  to see if you are up to their standards which are higher than your physicians.

  3. if you interest you can buy and download info about anemia from russian doctor healing.

i translated from russian on english.

  4. There's kind of a yes/no answer.

If you were low on Iron before, taking the extra Iron would replenish that (obviously), and as of your last blood workup, you had successfully replenished your Iron content. Now, if you were able to maintain that level of Iron without taking it supplementally, you don't need to continue taking them.

Basically, any minerals that are taken supplementally (especially Iron) are to take care of deficiencies from your diet and/or lifestyle... if you don't need the supplementation, you don't need it... but if you need it, you need it.

That being said, taking too much of Iron can be toxic (same with any mineral, but Iron is one of the easiest and most common to overdose on), so if your Iron level is good, I would lower the dose of it (since you aren't trying to increase it at that point) and find a "happy medium" where the Iron pills can maintain your Iron level without getting too much (maybe 1 a day or 1 every other day? You may have to experiment).

As to your question about Flaxseed, that's an entirely different beast than Iron. Added minerals are used to treat deficiencies as I mentioned, but herbs are a preventative measure that give your body nutrition it otherwise needs. That's why many people take various herbs for maintenance, even if they don't feel the effects of it when they take it.

Although very seldom is taking herbs long-term a "bad thing".
