My wife and I are wanting to have a baby and need to get health insurance that includes maternity. I have gotten a couple quotes, but they all seems somewhat high being that she is only 22 and in great health.

Who would be the best and most affordable provider to talk to?

Thanks,

Dustin

  1. Try this one - http://healthplans.my-age.net - my family have their health insurance - it is affordable and has good coverage for dental issues.

My wife had no problem with her insurance coverage while being pregnant.

  2. With individual health insurance all maternity is more of a "pre-payment" plan because only women interested in getting pregnant get the coverage. The higher premium and the waiting period insures that no insurance company is going to pay out more for your delivery than they receive in premium. You can almost always do better contacting the doctors and hospitals and setting up a payment plan.

Complications, such as a C-section, are covered with most individual policies even if you don't have maternity coverage so you do need coverage. Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can find the best and most affordable for you. There is no extra charge using an agent.

  3. The one through your employer.  Not only is maternity really expensive for private policies, but there's a waiting period that you have to carry it, before you can get pregnant - usually 9 to 12 months.

That's because only the people that want to use the maternity coverage, buy the maternity coverage.  Effectively, it becomes a "prepaid" plan.

Of course, once she's pregnant, she's not going to get ANYONE willing to give her health insurance, until after the baby's born, so now is definately the time.  But it's not cheap.  If you're looking for that $50 maternity rider, with a $100 deductible, it's just not there.  Kinda like looking for the 2009 Cadillac, on the lot, for $50.
