  1. It's socialized.

Everyone has to have health insurance.

If you are self employed or you earn as an employee more than 48.150€ / ya. you can choose a private health insurance company.

  2. Socialized every one has to have it but the companies that provide the care I am not sure if they are State run or privately owned.

  3. Germany has one of the best health care systems in the world and one of the most expensive, they are privately owned and regulated by the government (all the hospitals are also privately owned). The cost of health care is between 12.9 and 16 percent of your gross income, I pay between 85 and 110 Euro per month, the employer also pays the same amount. Everyone must pay for health care, unless you receive unemployment benefits or social assistance payments, then it's paid by the government, it isn't exactly true about children not paying, they are covered under one of their parents. The health insurance company (Krankenkasse) pays for all the expenses related to the treatment no matter what it is.

You have to pay the following extra charges; 10 Euro office fee every quarter (when you have to see a doctor), 10 Euro per day for hospitals (first 14 days), percentage of dentures, prescriptions about 3 Euro (some medications do not have a surcharge). Physio Therapy, chiropractor, etc. cost you 10 Euro per visit.

If you are sick, your employer must pay you your full wage for the first six weeks, after the six weeks the health insurance company (Krankenkasse) pays you 70 percent of your last month of work. There is also a clause stating that you can only receive sick benefits for the same sickness after a three year wait. This happened to my wife when she was diagnosed with cancer.

There is also bonus programs offered by some of the Krankenkasse, where you can receive up to 250 Euro for the year if you get physicals, cancer tests or take part in sport activities offered by some of the health insurance companies.  Every time you get a Krankenschein (medical release form work) you must pay a penalty and it is deducted from your bonus.

There is also private Krankenkasse companies in Germany and they are usually expensive, starting at about 250 - 300 Euro a month. If you are self employed or a Beamter (government employee, fireman, policeman or work for a Municipality or a job that has Beamter status), you have to have private health insurance...which is also offered by the normal health insurance providers.

  4. free for children and adults and one of the best in the world....why?

  5. You have to have a health insurance as a german resident.

Depending on your status it's private or socialized.

There are several ways to obtain it

1)You are an employee and they will deduct some fee for the health insurance from your salary, the same amount is paid by your employer

2)You are unemployed and receive unemployment benefit, the health care fee will be paid also

3)You receive retirement benefits the health care fee is deducted automatically

4)You receive social security payments, the health care will be paid automatically

5)You're income is above a certain level you pay the health care fee yourself with a private(and better) insurance company, as an high ranking employee you will receive some payback from the company depending on your status and contract, if you are a manager usually it's paid by the company fully for you and your family.

6)As a civil servant you pay a small fee yourself the bills from the doctors can be shown to your boss and you receive a large percentage back.
