Question:

Health insurance? I have none?

I'm 21 years old and have no health insurance. My step father will not allow me to go on my familys health insurance policy (even though they pay the same price with me on it, or with me off it)..

I do not qualify for any state assistance for health insurance because my step father makes a LOT of money, and he claims me on his taxes (so it is assumed that he takes care of me)..

I pay all of my other bills (car insurance, cell phone, etc...) and I am trying to go to school full time.

I'm not sure if i should just continue to have no health insurance (I get sick a lot!) and go to school, or stop going to school so that I can work so that I can pay for health insurance..

Any suggestions on which health insurance companies cost the least?

Health insurance is not available to me through my job.

  1. Could you possibly get your dad to explain why he does not want on his policy. Assuming he won't this would be easier to know what options are available to you if we had the state you live in. Does you school offer health insurance to students? Of not, try calling the insurance commissioner for your state and they will tell you what options are available to you.

  2. Your stepfather's employer cannot insure you on his plan after you reached the age of 21 UNLESS you are going to school full time.  You said you're trying.  Trying is not doing.  And, his employer's health insurance providers will need PROOF that you are FULL TIME.  After you reach 24, they won't cover you, regardless of your status at school.

You can buy your own health insurance.  But, it won't cover the small stuff unless you're paying about $1200 and up a month for that insurance.

  3. Your stepdad doesn't get to overrule the insurance company.

How about signing up for the health insurance plan through your college?

  4. Why does your stepfather claim you on his taxes?

Is he providing more than half of your support?  I see that you mentioned that you take care of all of your bills, but you didn't mention who takes care of your day to day living expenses.  Do you pay your own rent, or do you live with your stepfather?

If you're planning to go to school full time, you may want to check to see if your university has a student health insurance policy available to full time students.  If, as you say, you "get sick a lot" you might have trouble getting your own private policy.  (Depends on what you mean by "sick a lot" - if you have chronic ailments, you might get turned down by private companies.)

I'd either start checking into student health policies at the university or else get a new job where you have benefits available to you.

  5. just because your father IS the company, doesnt mean he writes the eligibility rules - the insurance company does.

as the others have stated... how is he claiming you at 21 years old??

if its decently priced, id look into your schools insurance..

if you get sick a lot, no insurance would just simply be ignorant.. just think of the bigger picture here.

you could try to get your own independent policy, but as others have stated, if you get sick a lot, you may not get accepted or the cost could be higher because of your medical history.
