Hi, I'm new to US. I'm planning to take up health insurance for my family. My employer is giving me the coverage but, he is quoting around $800 per month for my wife and 2 yr kid. I enquired on line and few of them came back to me with some patient advocacy program which, they say is only $140 per month for the family.

I'm little confused as to which one take which one take and why there is so much difference between them? Please advice.

Thanks,

Kiran

  1. A patient advocacy program won't pay your doctor or hospital bills. Major medical insurance will. If you are in good health you should be able to obtain individual health insurance, and for less money than group health insurance. The best thing about individual insurance is that you own the policy, not your employer. As long as you continue to pay the premiums the insurance company can't cancel your policy, or single you out for a rate increase based on your claims experience.

  3. Welcome to the US and welcome to one of our scams....  Patient advocacy program is a fancy word for "Discount Plan."  Unfortunately these companies prey on immigrants because they don’t necessarily understand the difference.

Our own FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has put out a warning on these plans AND I have that and an article on my site that explains the difference.

Bottom line is if you end up in the hospital with $100,000 of medical bills you’ll be responsible for those with a discount plan whereas insurance would pay for most of it (depending on the plan).

Here’s the link to the article and then you can get quotes for health insurance while you’re there…
