can your insurance deny your step children coverage?

  1. I'm assuming your insurance is through an employer??? &, yes... they can exclude step-children from coverage.


  2. Yes.  Sometimes.

    Depending on the kind of insurance you have, their medical history and the state you live in, the answer may vary.

    In California, if you are on a group medical insurance plan, and are adding your step children at Open Enrollment, and they are ACTUALLY your step-children (as in you are legally married to their parent; commonlaw marriage may not be enough) then the insurance company has to accept them, regardless of medical history.

    If  you are looking at an individual plan, or are outside of California, the rules will be different.
