My husband is in the military and is thinking about getting out.

Our health insurance is totally covered right now but in the civilian world we have no idea what the cost will be if he doesn't get a job that offers benifits.

I'm looking for any info about what people pay monthly, and co-pays for health insurance for a family with 1-2 children.

Thank you so mcuh!!!

  1. Your options are going to vary a lot depending on the state you live in.  Since you don’t mention where you live, it’s hard to tell you what kind of price range to expect.  But it’s easy to check it out for yourself.

If you visit an online health insurance agency like eHealthInsurance.com, where I work, you can get free quotes from a broad range of health insurance plans in your area.  You can also compare plans side by side to see how they stack up with regards to benefits and monthly premiums.  Our online services are free.

If and when the time comes that you need to find a plan for your family, you should work through a licensed agent.  It won’t cost you anything extra and you’ll get the benefit of an agent’s expertise and broader selection than any single company can offer.  You can talk with one of eHealthInsurance’s licensed agents at 1-800-977-8860.

  2. Yes, that’s right. If you or your husband will not able to find a job with health insurance, then be prepared to pay around 800 -1300 a month for a family of 4. Maybe a little less if you are in your 20s. You can check it yourself here:

Unfortunately that’s the reality of civilian world. I was without insurance for couple of month recently. My husband and I both lost our job. So I was forced to buy one for my own money. It was almost 1300 a moth for family of three. But I am in my forties. So, try, maybe it will be cheaper for you.

  3. im in MA and people with family plans are paying about $120/week.  Im on a single plan and I pay about $63/week. Get ready to pay a lot for insurance... and co-pays are at least $10. It all changes with the plan, and your income level

  4. Our family of five, our share of the insurance is $400 a month.  DH's employer pays another $700 a month.  This is a $100 deductible, $25 copay kinda plan.

The average low deductible family plan costs about $1000 a month - with no maternity coverage.  If he doesn't get a job with benefits, you can plan on paying at least that much.  If you want materntiy, it's probably going to run you an additional $300 a month.

If you can't afford those premiums, you'll need to talk to a local agent, who can show you how to balance premiums with deductibles ($2500, $5,000, or $10,000) to help you get coverage you can afford.

  5. I sold insurance for many years, and to tell you the truth, for a family of 4 you will be looking at between $800 and $1,500 a month assuming you are all healthy and don't smoke.

That's why 48,000,000 americans are uninsured.
