  1. Use yellowpages.com to search for health insurance brokers in your area. A Broker represents multiple carriers and can help you sort through all the different insurance companies and plan options in your state. Don't call your auto and home agent they specialize in property and causality insurance. You need someone that specializes in health insurance. These areas of insurance even require separate licenses.

Here is one in Albuquerque D L G Health Insurance, Incorporated (505) 319-1734

  2. OK, there IS no cheap health insurance, that's real insurance.  Family insurance with a low deductible costs $1,000 a month, that's just what it costs.

You can buy a list from a "health plan" that offers discounts - but all you get is a list of names.  There is no paying any bills, and no guarantee that the names on the list will give you a discount.

Or if you're low income, you can try to sign your kids up for welfare insurance - the state children's health insurance plan.

  3. There is no way anyone here can recommend a policy because no one here knows your situation. Health insurance is not one size fits all; there are hundreds of plans available and they are all different. How smart is it to save $30 per month on your premium if what you need covered is not covered and you wind up with a $100,000 medical bill sometime in the future?

Visit a local agent that works with all the major companies in your area. The agent can explain the coverage with the different plans and can explain if the policy has any pre-existing condition clauses that would affect your situation. There is no extra charge using an agent.

  4. Zarnev is right that it’s not as simple as suggesting a specific health insurance plan for you.  You need to know what kind of benefits you value and what you can personally afford.  On the other hand, Mbrcatz17 is wrong to suggest that you’re going to have to pay $1000 a month to find quality coverage with a low deductible.  That’s just not true for most people.

If you want to know what kind of health insurance options are available in your area and how much they cost, take a few minutes to visit an online health insurance marketplace like eHealthInsurance.com (where I work).  There are others too.  You can get quotes from brand name insurance companies almost instantly and compare plan rates and benefits to find one that will work for you.  I just took a look at quotes generated through our website for a 31-year-old mother in New Mexico with four kids ranging in ages from 1 to 9 and found over 60 to choose from, all well less than $1000 a month, some as low as $150 a month.  Those prices assume you are all relatively healthy, and the ages and such might not match up with your situation, but at least it gives you an idea of the range of options in your state. Also, those plans and rates were available when I looked, but they are subject to change depending on when you look—a carrier might remove a plan or change its rates.  It’s not like the airlines where a plane ticket price can change at any time, but carriers do make changes from time to time.

Be sure to talk with a licensed agent in your area, or to one of the licensed agents available through eHealthInsurance.com.  An agent can help you figure out what kind of health plan will work best for your particular needs and budget.
