Health insurance in the United Arab Emirates?

My husband is a highly qualified expat from the USA and is offered a job in Abu Dhabi. He is offered only the national health insurance called Daman and no short term disability insurance. Is the offer usual? Do you know of any insurances we could buy aditionally?

Most widely accepted medical/health insurance is Daman in Abu Dhabi. It is of the National Health Insurance Company.

But there are a wide range of insurance packages, and the provision of the package is depending on the company in which your husband is joining.

Yes this is usual. Healthcare in Abu Dhabi has to be provided and paid by the employer only. Daman is a German Insurance company (Muenchner Rueck) and offers a good service and a wide network.

Companies offer group insurances and conditions for all employees have to be the same. It is not possible to have an international insurance plan for all employees and only one employee receives the global. There must be a minimum of employees in this group insurances to receive the global package, too.

I assume that your husband will have more European collegues than Americans and that this is the reason for offering the international package.

Here in the Abu Dhabi it may be difficult to get a personal health insurance. Try to obtain any private American insurance where you will be covered.

The tricky thing is that you will read advertisements of healthcare providers in Dubai offering single policies, but you'll be refused holding an Abu Dhabi residence visa.
