  1. In CA, once you turn 18, your eligibility for medi-cal changes from being covered under your parents as a child to being covered as an adult with at least a 12 month disability (since I'm guessing you have no children of your own). If you still live at home and your parents still support you, their income would be counted for your eligibility. You probably have eligibility based on your disability (since that is a requirement for an adult to have eligibility in CA. Once you start working (and you still live at home) all of that income will be counted as well. This could cause you to be over the guidelines for medi-cal. In which case you will either have a share of cost or will be dropped.

As Zarnev correctly stated, you will not be able to get an individual policy for health care. An employer based coverage is your only option. Some policies have exclusionary periods and some do not. Your coverage on medi-cal will count towards any waiting period for coverage for a pre-existing condition.

  2. A brain tumor would be an automatic decline with any individual policies. If you get a job with health benefits they will have to accept you. If you can stay on Medi-cal until your benefits kick in they will cover the pre-existing condition. If you have a lapse of coverage greater than 63 days they will accept you but not cover your pre-existing condition for up to 1 year.
