Question:

Health insurance question: Will they tell my mom?

I just have a very important question concerning my gyno visit and my insurance. When I went there for a check up, I had to secretly go because my mother ignores me and refuses to take me. I had a written note from my regular doctor to go.

When I got there, they told me my insurance is under a "family" so if i do check up, the insurance company will notify my parents. Will they really do that? I am so worried. I am too scared to tell my mom. I couldn't get the insurance card because my mother holds it and I don't know where it is, I also couldn't afford $100 for the check up.

What should I do? Will the insurance company really notify my parents?

  1. Usually, insurance companies send an Explanation of Benefits form every time they pay a claim.  Your mom will see the form, which will tell her the name of the doctor and that you were the patient.

When I was still on my parents' insurance and needed birth control, I went to a Planned Parenthood type place and paid cash for just that reason.

I'm sorry your mom ignores you, but you may want to tell her before she finds out from the insurance company.

    Good luck.

  2. Anytime that insurance is billed they will send a letter to the household saying who went and what for (for your visit it may say routine tests or may be specific).

  3. If you've got an HMO, they don't send out statements for regular doctor visits - not even specialists.

So it's going to depend on the type of plan you have.

  4. First off how old are you?  Second..... because of a privacy laws i dont think they are able to discuss the details of the visit. Third.... I think its best you discuss this with you mom even thought she does want to listen... A lot of teenage girls get themselve into trouble because no one wants to listen.  Good luck

  5. Try visiting the health department. They can give you a list of free clinics you can visit.

I'm sure they won't mail or call home with the info.

But if your mom happends to ask, or simply look online she will know.
