Health issues force Texans' defensive coach Wade Phillips on medical leave – NFL News
Having overcome the problem of injuries to their key players to register record number of wins of seven consecutive games the Houston Texan now stand losing another crucial member of their side to injury; this time it is their
assistant coach Wade Phillips.
Phillips has to undergo a surgery to fix his kidney problems which he said was not a life-threatening one. He will be away from his team for a couple of weeks. He had made the team aware of his health issues at their practice session
on Wednesday.
"I feel good," Phillips said. "I don't have any physical problems right now, so if I get this done, this procedure that I'm doing, then I'll be fine."
The Texans have been making headlines over their issue of injuries to their key players, signing and waiving of players and reshuffling their positions to overcome the loss of players for over about a month.
Despite this they have managed to continue their winning streak, and to have become first side to win American Football Conference (AFC) south division title and claim a playoff berth in the first time in history.
They are playing their next game against Indianapolis Colts on December 22 and the gap of more than a week has given their defensive coach to get fixed his health problems. He will have surgery this week.
He is expected to be replaced by Texans linebacker coach Reggie Herring to run defence for them. He had earlier performed duties at the position.
"He's ready to do it," Houston coach Gary Kubiak said. "Reggie's called defenses before. We got a lot of confidence. We just need to keep going."
The side expects that new coach will not be making any changes at the position, continuing from where Phillips will leave them. "At the end of the day I'm not Wade Phillips," Herring said, "but it's Wade Phillips' system. It's
our calls. It's what the players know."
The Texans 10-3 in AFC south still have three more games to go before closing of current regular season of National Football League (NFL). Having already made it to playoff they are comfortably sitting and can afford to be without
few players.
They are already without their first pick quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Matt Leinart while their wide receiver’s status in unclear yet.
